Homesteading

Homesteading

Self-Sufficiency

Sustainability

Reconnect with nature

1、 Go Homemade

2、Grow Plants

Herbs
Basil
Lemon Balm
Oregano
Rosemary
Sage
Lettuce
Tomato

3. Preserve Food

+. Herbed Butter

+. Herbed Oil

+. Herbed Salt

4. Bokashi Compost

The Rise of Homesteading: A New Vision for Self-Sufficient Living

Rushing through work day after day, you open your eyes each morning to an endless to-do list. After finishing a day packed with reports and meetings, you return home to a messy living space. When you finally get a moment to scroll through your phone, all you see are agitating commercial advertisements.

Is this your life right now?

While minimalist Japanese dramas and lifestyle documentaries are trending, and "Love Yourself" slow living topics are everywhere, it seems everyone is pursuing a healing lifestyle. Today, let's embrace an eco-friendly mindset and experience urban living differently.

Here's a case study shared by our friend who has worked in fast-moving consumer goods marketing for years.
Let's hear her real story about reconsidering "ideal living"!

Last year, we needed to promote a new product, so we asked an advertising agency to pitch a creative campaign centered around "ideal living."

The agency's creative director excitedly painted a picture of an elite woman's urban life: "Taking international conference calls, wearing Chanel Slingbacks, driving a Porsche Macan, with a new Hermès Kelly 31 bag in the passenger seat, rushing through luxurious office buildings, heading to high-end yoga classes with hurried steps..."

A few years ago, I would have been completely drawn into this role and approved the proposal, but at that moment, I felt uninspired. I turned to the junior staff member beside the creative director and asked, "Is this your ideal life?"

She laughed awkwardly and replied, "Isn't this everyone's ideal life?"

I cautiously suggested, "Let's all experience life properly this weekend and discuss again next week."

A week later, the junior staff member returned with a "mindful living" proposal that we all agreed with.

"On a breezy sunny day, carrying a bamboo basket, riding a bicycle through the countryside, picking freshly ripened oranges from an orchard, then returning home humming while washing and drying the fruit, preparing to make seasonal orange marmalade..."

Our friend told us that after the presentation, she booked a weekend getaway to experience what truly healing "ideal living" means.

Have you thought about what your ideal lifestyle looks like? Is it a free-spirited country life or a glamorous urban existence? Today, we're proposing a combination of both, allowing you to enjoy rural living while staying in the city.

Trendy and Chill Homesteading:
Bringing the Farm into Your Home

Homesteading combines "Home" and "Steading" (farm), literally meaning creating a farm at home. It's the trending indoor greenhouse concept in Taiwan. This represents a fusion of tradition and modernity, inheriting humanity's most primitive social state while applying it to modern life in innovative ways, creating a new lifestyle integrated with technology.

Over the past three years, amid global pandemics and wars, some urban young people have begun shifting towards self-sufficient lifestyles to cope with various uncertainties. Homesteading has no defined scale - from growing vegetables in a garden to raising birds and animals, various models revolve around the core concept of "returning to nature," creating a plot of land in precious urban space.

3 Core Principles of Homesteading:

Self-Sufficiency:

Achieving 100% self-sufficiency isn't easy, but having this mindset is the first step! Try starting with just 10% self-sufficiency and observe how these small changes affect your lifestyle and mood: establish a regular routine, try waking up half an hour earlier, tend to your garden, reduce spending on purchases, increase time cooking at home, eat out less, and find satisfaction in living in the present moment.

Sustainability:

Life sustainability is a crucial value, such as installing solar panels for power, recycling household items, using earth-friendly cleaning products to reduce chemicals, treating Earth as our home with care. Additionally, create your own small ecological balance by composting kitchen waste for your garden.

Reconnect with Nature:

Living in urban areas, many of us have rarely had the chance to touch soil from childhood. It's time for people to return to nature's embrace! Deeply understand that humans are just temporary guests in the natural environment, not the center of the world. Start by respecting and caring for life, reducing harm to the natural environment, allowing our non-human neighbors on Earth to enjoy quality life too.

4 Tips to Start Your Homesteading Journey:

1. Go Homemade:

First, choose a dish you eat most often and enjoy most. Then, search for related recipes online. Finally, learn how to prepare ingredients from your own produce to replace previous expenses. To build a sustainable lifestyle at home, start by enjoying and getting used to cooking as your first step toward self-sufficiency!

2. Grow Plants:

Do you have a habit of decorating with plants at home? Besides common ornamental plants, consider choosing some beautiful and practical plants like herbs or easy-to-grow vegetables and fruits. Here are some growing tips:

Herbs: These are among the easiest species to grow. They grow quickly, boosting the grower's sense of achievement. They're also adaptable to various environments - just choose a ventilated space with windows, and you can relaxedly wait for the sprouts to emerge.

Easy Vegetables and Fruits: These can be grown through hydroponics or soil cultivation, depending on the species. Just choose a well-ventilated environment with sufficient sunlight, add plant nutrients regularly, and you can harvest abundant produce periodically.

4. Bokashi Composting:

Plant Type Recommended Species
Herbs Basil:
Helps with mental calm and relaxation. Widely used in various cuisines, such as Italian pesto, Thai basil pork, or Taiwanese three-cup dishes.
Lemon Balm:
Can boost immunity and aid sleep. Suitable for cooking or brewing tea. Try using it to make meal sauces!
Oregano:
Can treat colds, fever, and heat exhaustion. It's the soul of classic Margherita pizza and pairs well with seafood to remove fishy taste and add flavor.
Rosemary:
Can improve metabolism and provide antioxidant benefits, even preventing hair loss. Add it when cooking red meat for both aroma and therapeutic benefits.
Sage:
Can help replenish energy. In Greece, it was considered an elixir of wisdom. Excellent for rich dishes as it helps cut through greasiness.
Vegetables &
Fruits
Sweet Potato Leaf:
Can be grown through water propagation. Cut 10-15 cm of top shoots, remove leaves from the lower stem, and harvest in about 20 days.
Lettuce:
Choose suitable soil and bury seeds deep enough for root growth. Can be harvested after 50 days and grown in all seasons. (Avoid direct sunlight in summer)
Cherry Tomatoes:
Choose a well-lit environment, can be hydroponic, ready for harvest in about 100 days.
Herbs Preservation: Focus on creating "value-added products" due to their direct edibility.

+. Herbed Butter: Wash herbs and blend with softened butter until thoroughly combined, then reshape to create your unique "herb butter"! Perfect for cooking or spreading on bread for an elegant and delicious treat!

+. Herbed Oil: Chop herbs and immerse in olive oil, ensuring complete coverage. Let sit for 3 weeks, then filter to obtain flavored oil.

+. Herbed Salt: Dehydrate herbs, crush into powder, mix with salt crystals, and store in an airtight container for several months.

Vegetables & Fruits: Due to higher water content and perishability, require more complex preservation procedures.

+. Freezing: Clean and blanch leafy greens or root vegetables to maintain freshness. Cut and portion into convenient cooking amounts before freezing.

+. Fermenting: Clean and dry root vegetables or fruits, cut into chunks, place in a clean, dry sealed container with pure water, salt, and spices. Refrigerate overnight. Your delicious and convenient pickled side dish is ready!

+. Drying: A common preservation method for both vegetables and fruits! For fruits, wash and soak in 50% diluted lemon juice to prevent discoloration, peel if needed and slice uniformly for efficient drying. For vegetables, keep skin unless necessary, briefly blanch and slice uniformly. Place sliced produce on kitchen paper or baking paper in a well-ventilated area to dry, extending shelf life.

4. Bokashi Composting:

When you start cooking, you'll inevitably face the dreaded food waste issue. Why not reuse it by creating your own small fertilizer system? It's odorless and helps heal the soil! Unlike traditional composting methods (biogas, hot composting, or garden composting) that release large amounts of CO2 and methane, Bokashi composting produces minimal CO2 and no methane.

First, select a container with a tap; then, layer kitchen waste and EM bacteria like making a sandwich - these bacteria can even break down meat and dairy products. After stopping additions for a week, drain the fermentation liquid every 2 days for use as cleaning solution. After 35 days, when the mycelia change from white to aged, bury the compost in soil for 2 weeks to complete the process. Let all nutrients return to the soil!

When you integrate self-grown food into your life, your home atmosphere will be completely different! Imagine waking up each morning to a verdant balcony welcoming you to a new day - doesn't that sound refreshing?

Jump on this trend and start creating your own home greenhouse! Turn your home into a hidden urban oasis, bringing fresh vitality to your unchanging daily routine while gradually reducing dining-out expenses!
